Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland

VISITS TO CCMI CAN BE BOOKED NOW! — WE ARE REPAIRING MORE ARTEFACTS FOR DISPLAY

Yes that’s right, a computer museum. We have an array of electronic artefacts on display includes such iconic computers as the DEC PDP 11, Apple II, IBM PC, Amiga, Sinclair ZX81 and the Commodore Vic-20.

There are exhibits too on the development of the portable computer, the printer, the microprocessor. Visitors will learn about the hidden history of women in technology as well as the influence of science fiction on the development of technologies.

The museum is based in Insight@NUI Galway.

Smart Futures

Insight researchers are available to come to your school and talk to students, parents and teachers about what they do and the careers that are available to young people in science, technology, engineering and maths.
Smart Futures is a Science Foundation Ireland funded project so all speakers are available free of charge to schools.

BEO Fadó Fado digital heritage archives

CONTRIBUTE! – You can contribute to an online repository of photographs, films and stories that reflect the social, economic, educational, religious and cultural life in Galway and Ireland in days gone by.

We are asking people to look in their family albums and elsewhere, particularly for photographs, that could provide a fascinating insight into the way of life of the Irish people up to 1973 when Ireland became a member of the European Union (European Economic Community-EEC).
Known as the BEO (Irish for ‘alive’) irishbeo.com is a Digital Heritage Online Archive Library.

Apps4Gaps

An annual app development competition. Use the CSO’s data to develop an app and make the world a better place. Who knows? You might make your first million from it.

Coding Clubs

We do everything we can to facilitate digital maker clubs such as Coderdojo, Hackerspaces, Maker Faire and 091Labs.

On Saturdays during the school year, Insight@NUI Galway hosts up to 200 children, teenagers and their parents, who come to Coderdojo sessions and learn a range of computer languages including Scratch, Python and HTML .

Combating Cyberbullying

Insight’s education and public engagement team offers talks and workshops about staying safe online. We can deliver talks to parents and teachers or students – often both students and parents need advice and support in how to deal with issues such as cyberbullying.

We work closely with An Garda Siochána and youth support agencies in delivering these services.

Girls Hack Ireland

Girls Hack Ireland is a program developed by The Insight Centre for Data Analytics (@insight_centre) with the explicit aim of generating knowledge & interest among younger girls to pursue the academic disciplines of STEM(science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects through creative, interactive learning.

Pint of science

Your local pub just became a lot smarter with the Pint of Science event. Scientists explaining their research, a tipple or two, what’s not to like?

RailsGirls

Are you interested in computing and technology? Are you female? Well Insight’s RailsGirls event could be for you. RailsGirls is a worldwide movement aimed at encouraging young women to code. Ruby on Rails is a web app framework for the Ruby programming language. Insight@NUI Galway has run annual RailsGirls events since 2010. The event is free and open to girls from all over Ireland and further afield.
